Garrett Brent Phillips, a young man with a heart of gold, passed away on September 4th, 2008.

Born in Fresno, California, to Brent and Linda Phillips on July 2, 1988, Garrett was the third of eight children in a vibrant LDS family.

From an early age onward, Garrett brought smiles and laughter into people's lives. His easy-going personality and friendly humor made Garrett popular with family and friends.

Garrett welcomed people into his life as he attended local schools including Las Vegas Day School, Bonanza High, and Meadows. He played football, wrestled, and created award-winning artwork.

He was an Eagle Scout.

Garrett shared his time to benefit others. In his daily life, he was surrounded by younger siblings, cousins, and nephews. He enjoyed being with children, who recognized and loved Garrett's tender heart. To many he was "Gare-Bear" -- muscled and tough on the outside, yet soft and caring just beneath the surface. Garrett is attributed to saving the life of one of his younger siblings earlier this year.

Beyond Las Vegas, Garrett has improved the lives of people in Kenya, Mexico, and Guatemala, as he volunteered for service expeditions with Choice Humanitarian.

Most recently as a personal trainer, Garrett helped people set and achieve fitness goals. At the same time, he was beginnning his college education. In many ways, he was preparing for his future. The day before he died, he was planning to start piano lessons again.

Garrett is survived by his parents, Brent and Linda, and by his seven siblings: Brittany (Nathan Herlean), Brandon, Amber, Nicole, Danielle, McCall, and Summer. Nephews include Krew, Matix, and Nixon.
